A Leadership Perspective by Tonie Leatherberry

We stand at the cusp of a technological revolution led by Artificial Intelligence. Guiding its development and application through ethical frameworks and sound policy is now more crucial than ever.

My journey through corporate governance and leadership has deeply influenced my understanding. I’ve seen the profound impact of emerging technologies, particularly AI, on our businesses, societies, and ethical paradigms.

The acceleration of AI innovation brings with it a plethora of opportunities to enhance efficiency, foster economic growth, and solve some of our most complex challenges.

However, it also raises significant ethical considerations that must be addressed to ensure these advancements benefit all segments of society equitably. As a corporate leader, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative potential of AI in decision-making processes, operational efficiencies, and customer engagements. Yet, the responsibility accompanying the deployment of these technologies cannot be overstated.

Ethical AI governance is paramount to mitigating privacy, bias, accountability, and transparency risks. By their nature, AI systems learn from vast datasets to make predictions or decisions. If these datasets carry historical biases, the AI systems can perpetuate or even exacerbate these biases, leading to unfair outcomes.
As leaders in technology and business, we have a critical responsibility. We must ensure that AI systems are designed and implemented, focusing on ethical considerations, fairness, and inclusivity.

Advocating for comprehensive AI policies is a critical step toward achieving this goal. Policies must be crafted to foster innovation while also protecting individuals’ rights and promoting social good.

This involves a collaborative effort among technologists, policymakers, business leaders, and civil society to establish AI development and use guidelines. These guidelines must address key ethical issues such as data privacy, algorithmic transparency, and the social implications of AI applications.

My advocacy for AI ethics and policy is driven by a commitment to harnessing the power of technology to create a more equitable and just society. This entails actively participating in dialogues and forums that aim to shape the future of AI governance.

By sharing insights and learnings from my experiences, I hope to contribute to developing AI systems that are technologically advanced, ethically grounded, and socially responsible.

Education plays a crucial role in advancing ethical AI. As we prepare the next generation of leaders, we must incorporate ethics and policy into AI and technology curricula. This will equip future technologists and business leaders with the critical thinking skills to navigate the complex ethical landscapes they will face.

Furthermore, diversity and inclusion must be at the forefront of AI development and policy-making processes. Diverse perspectives are essential in identifying potential biases and ensuring that AI systems serve the needs of a broad spectrum of communities.

Inclusion in AI goes beyond just the datasets; it extends to the teams that design, develop, and deploy AI systems. A diverse workforce is more likely to recognize and address ethical issues that may not be apparent to a more homogenous group.

As we progress, I focus on advocating for AI policies, prioritizing ethical considerations, and promoting a more inclusive and equitable technological future. The path towards ethical AI is complex and requires sustained engagement from all stakeholders involved. However, I am optimistic that through collaborative efforts, we can achieve a balance between innovation and ethical responsibility, ensuring that AI serves as a force for good in our world.

In conclusion, the journey towards ethical AI is not a solo endeavor but a collective one. It demands vigilance, collaboration, and a steadfast commitment to our shared human values. As I continue to advocate for ethical AI and sound policy, I invite you to join me in this critical dialogue, for our decisions today will shape the technological landscape for future generations.
