I recently read an article published in the Search Engine Journal, 10 Top Digital Marketing Trends to Watch Through 2021, by Lemuel Park. As an integrative strategic thinker with a keen understanding of the critical role digital marketing plays to build a brand, this article resonated with me.

The article highlights how digital transformation compounded exponentially:

“This past year, digital transformation became a reality for businesses of all kinds as the global pandemic accelerated the pace of change by years. The future trends you were using to guide your digital marketing strategy previously may now be outdated, while entirely new issues have sprung up to command our attention. Consumer needs and behaviors have dramatically changed.”

All points in the article are spot-on, though I feel Points 4 and 8 are particularly important as you look to scale your operations.

Point 4 discusses how customers expect to have a comprehensive experience with a company, beyond its products and services.

“In its recent State of the Connected Customer survey, Salesforce found that 80% of customers believe the experience they have with a company is just as important as its products and services.”

Point 8, while focusing on SEO and PPC, highlights the need to collaboratively share data

with other departments to proactively respond to customer needs.

“SEO data for example is now giving product teams granularity into customer preferences.”

In essence, these points underscore the need for truly integrative processes and interactions. Externally, it is critical to integrate all customer touchpoints so their interactions with any department within an organization make them feel valued. Internally, it requires breaking down departmental silos to share data in order to connect the dots that would highlight unique customer insights and preferences.

It will be interesting to see where digital marketing takes us next, in 2021 and in the years to come.
